Khabib Nurmagomedov's 24-year-old cousin Umar, another unbeaten Sambo expert from Dagestan, has been signed by the UFC.
The UFC announced the deal on Instagram, saying: "Umar Nurmagomedov joins the UFC ranks. His debut will take place on April 19 at UFC 249." The post was liked by Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Umar Nurmagomedov, like his famous cousin, is an unbeaten mixed martial artist with a chin-strap beard and two cauliflower ears that come from years spent wrestling on the mat.
In 12 professional fights, Umar Nurmagomedov has secured six decision wins, five by submission, and one knockout finish.
His last victory was at the Gorilla Fighting Championship 20 event in Uzbekistan, and saw Umar win in the first round with a rear-naked choke. Khabib was in the crowd.
Prior to that, Umar fought twice for the United States-based MMA firm Professional Fighters League, winning both contests by decision.
Umar trains alongside Khabib with Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Khabib's father, when in Dagestan, and with elite MMA coach Javier Mendez when they are at the AKA gym in San Jose, California.
His UFC debut at UFC 249 in Brooklyn is just one bout in what is expected to be one of the best combat events of the year. The main event of the evening is a fight between Khabib, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, and extraordinary and unpredictable mauler Tony Ferguson. Business Insider will be in attendance at the event.
The UFC president Dana White indicated last month at a press conference in Las Vegas that should Nurmagomedov defeat Ferguson, then he would like to see him have a rematch with Conor McGregor, who recently destroyed Donald Cerrone in his comeback fight at UFC 246.
